Help your students think critically about movement

Support students to connect clinical knowledge with whole-body movement, explore possible explanations and justify their next clinical decision.

Guest lectures, practical workshops and educator sessions shaped around your programme’s learning outcomes.

Connect clinical knowledge with movement understanding

Anatomy, biomechanics and clinical assessment provide a foundation. Applying that knowledge to the way an individual moves requires students to weigh up observations, explore alternative explanations and decide what to investigate next.

The From the Feet Up Movement Reasoning Framework™ provides a structured way to make that reasoning visible. It brings the person’s goals, movement, task and context into case discussions, alongside discipline-specific assessment and clinical evidence.

Help students explain their reasoning

OBSERVE WITH PURPOSE

Describe what is happening during a movement task and distinguish an observation from an interpretation.

EXPLORE POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS

Consider how the whole body, the task and the person’s circumstances might contribute to what they see.

JUSTIFY & REVIEW DECISIONS

Explain the purpose of an assessment or intervention, then use reassessment to reconsider the next step.

A framework for teaching movement reasoning

The From the Feet Up Movement Reasoning Framework™ organises discussion around six connected stages. Each stage gives students a question to work through and educators a way to explore their reasoning.

01 Client-Centred Inquiry

What matters to this person, and what are they trying to do?

02 Observe

What is happening during the movement and task?

03 Interpret

What might explain these observations, and what else should we consider?

04 Identify the Driver

Which factor appears most relevant, and how could we test that hypothesis?

05 Select Intervention

What are we trying to influence, and why is this approach appropriate?

06 Reassess

What has changed, and what does that mean for the next step?

NOT A PROTOCOL.    A WAY OF THINKING

TEACHING OPTIONS FOR YOUR PROGRAM

Guest Lectures

Introduce movement reasoning through whole-body examples and guided case discussion.

Practical Workshops

Explore observation and clinical hypotheses through movement tasks, demonstrations and reassessment.

Educator Sessions

Discuss ways to use consistent reasoning prompts within tutorials, practical teaching and placement supervision.

Sessions can be tailored to your students’ stage of learning, your curriculum and the reasoning skills you want to develop.

About Tracy Cooke

Tracy Cooke is a podiatrist, educator and founder of The Stabilisation Academy, with more than 30 years of clinical experience.

Alongside her clinical practice, she lectures and supervises podiatry students at The University of Western Australia.

Her teaching connects movement observation with the reasoning behind clinical decisions.
